4 Super Bowl Comfort Foods Transformed to be Acne-Friendly

With the Super Bowl just around the corner, parties from coast to coast are already being planned. Chicken wings, pizza, beer and salty snacks are usually the go-to’s for most menus, and for anyone with acne, these greasy treats can not only trigger panic, but breakouts as well.

Much like the game of football itself, treating acne takes both offensive and defensive measures to achieve a win for your skin, combining treatment regimens to attack the acne cascade both from within, and on the surface. Wings

Aside from football, the Super Bowl is almost as synonymous with beer and chicken wings. By opting for a non-fried recipe, and adding some garlic, lemon and a little vodka for a bit of a low-sugar kick, you can splurge a little and join in on the fun, without worrying about an oily mess all over your face. Enjoying yourself while keeping your skincare in mind is all about balance, so munching on carrots, celery, or any other bite-sized snack with a crunch throughout the day can help curb the urge to reach for too much of the greasy stuff, giving your body a hydrating and healthy dose of vitamins your skin will be sure to love. Lemon and Garlic Chicken Wings

Lemon and Garlic Chicken Wings
  • 2 pounds chicken wings
  • 6 cloves garlic, mashed
  • ¼ cup vodka
  • juice from 2 lemons
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • salt and pepper to taste

Preheat oven to 400F. In a large bowl or bag, combine all ingredients, being sure to coat wings with mix, and refrigerate for 2-4 hours. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil, and arrange wings along the pan, pouring marinade over the wings. Bake for 20 minutes, then flip and cook for another 20-25 minutes until meat is fully cooked all the way through (no pink). Serve warm.

Pizza

It wouldn’t be a party without pizza, but for anyone with acne-prone skin, especially of the oily variety, this favored go-to might come served with an extra bit of guilt and reservation…but not our version! Some acne sufferers seem to find that an anti-inflammatory diet can help their skin because the hormone-heavy dairy and sugary carbs that make up pizza can trigger acne symptoms. So kick back and enjoy yourself by trying this easy-to-make gluten-free, Chicago-style pizza recipe.

You can be daring or not, but we recommend using goat cheese because some people with acne tolerate goat’s milk better than cow’s milk. Feel free to substitute the goat cheese for an organic Italian blend of cheeses (mozzarella, provolone, romano & parmesan).

  • 1 gluten free cornmeal pizza crust
  • organic grass fed goat cheese
  • organic pasta sauce
  • veggies of your choosing (acne-friendly favorites include tomato, olives, red or orange peppers, onions, broccoli and zucchini)

Preheat oven to 425F. Lightly sauté or grill your vegetables with a splash of olive oil, salt and pepper. Spread a spoonful of sauce over the crust, then add the cheese and veggies to your liking (just go easy on the cheese). Bake in the oven for 12-15 minutes, slice and serve!

This light and easy to create dip is not only rich in protein, but also contains antioxidant-heavy olive oil and antibacterial garlic, making this tasty treat a touchdown for clear complexions.

  • 1 can cannellini beans
  • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 4-5 garlic cloves, mashed
  • handful of fresh sage leaves
  • salt and pepper to taste

Empty beans into a large bowl and mash, set aside. Heat oil over medium heat in a sauce pan, adding garlic and sage, stirring until fragrant, about 5 minutes. Incorporate infused oil into beans, adding salt and pepper to taste. Serve warm or cold with sliced, toasted pita chips.

Alcoholic drinks, beer included, are high in sugar content, which can make hormones go haywire, triggering acne. If you’re going to reach for a beer, make sure it’s a lighter brew, over dark or flavored. Better yet, make a simple cocktail that will do your skin a favor, with anti-oxidant red wine. Simply mix 2 parts red wine with 1 part lemon-lime sparkling water, pour over ice, and enjoy!
