When people talk about fighting acne, it’s usually the blemishes that affect the face that come to mind. Yet for many, these breakouts don’t stop at the skin that you see. Body acne is just as much an issue on the minds of the acne-prone, and with a holiday like Valentine’s Day coming up, the prospect of potentially snuggling up with a sweetie can be stressful.
The most common areas for acne to show up on the body appear on the chest, neck, shoulders, back, and butt. In the same way that it takes consistent work to keep our faces blemish-free, it takes at least as much effort to do the same for our bodies.
So here are just a few simple things to help treat your skin to a little extra love this Valentine’s Day that work great in combination with our specifically formulated body acne treatment and any other AcnEase treatment.
Hydrate, inside and out! Keeping your skin healthy and moisturized is super important, especially in the cold winter months. With frigid, harsh winds outside, and forced, hot air from our heating systems indoors, staying hydrated should take precedence as the temperatures drop. Not only does dehydrated skin dry out, making it itchy and uncomfortable, but it can also trigger the sebaceous glands to produce more sebum, which can join those dry, dead skin cells to clog pores, leading to acne breakouts. Look for a thick formula containing healing oatmeal or calming lavender to soothe skin. If lotion isn’t for you, keeping hydrated from within can do just as much good, if not more.
Adjust your showers! As tempting as it is to stand under a stream of hot water after getting out of bed on those cold mornings, try to resist the urge and keep temps at a moderate level, as hot water can dry skin. If you feel the need to indulge with a soak and have some downtime, treat yourself to a super rejuvenating herbal bath, which prevents breakouts.
Dress for success! Certain fabrics are known for being more breathable than others, and when it comes to keeping skin clean, natural fabrics can make for an easy adjustment to any body-care routine. Cotton and hemp make for great lighter layers or sleepwear, while wool or corduroy can keep your body warm, and are much better for the skin than fleece or polyester. Have fun with scarves and hats this snowy season, looking to knitted wool, alpaca, angora, and cashmere to keep your head and neck protected from the elements!
Clean those towels! Just as you wouldn’t use dirty hands or brushes to apply makeup to your face, you won’t want to use a dirty towel to clean your beautiful body. Dead skin cells and other bacteria can collect on towels and transfer onto the skin, which can lead to clogged pores, so don’t forget to throw those towels and bathrobe into the wash!
Treat your body as gently as you would your face. We’ve all seen the commercials--a freshly showered woman gently pats the water from her newly-washed face with a clean, fluffy towel, using the care one might give to a newborn baby. It is important to remember that we don’t have to stop at the neck to treat ourselves to that little bit of extra tenderness. When you don’t have the time to treat yourself to a spa treatment, just devote an extra minute extending that attention to the neck, back and bottom with an exfoliating scrub in the shower, or even just lingering in a soft towel before getting dressed.
