Good Sun & Bad Sunscreen: 2 Myths About Sun Protection By Dr. Agnes Olszewski

Most of us are led to believe that if we slather on sunscreen  in the morning and then stay out on the beach all day long, our skin is protected. Unfortunately, this is incorrect.  Learning about proper sun protection and sunscreens will keep you and your skin safe!

Myth 1:  The sun is bad for you

Fact:  No, the sun is NOT BAD for you.

In fact, the sun is healthy if you take precautions. Ultraviolet light from the sun comes in two main wavelengths: UVA and UVB. They are quite different in respect of the risk they create for your health. UVB is the “good” sunlight and UVA is the “bad” one.   UVB helps you produce vitamin D that is extremely important for your overall wellbeing, supporting the health of your bones, muscles, skin, eyesight, heart and immune system. UVA can cause free radical damage.

Acne and Diet

Now that I have your attention, let’s talk about what you eat and how it affects your skin.

Diet alone isn’t the cause of skin problems like acne, but it can clearly exasperate its symptoms. The good news is, it can also help in eliminating them.

Acne is a manifestation of an internal imbalance that makes our sebaceous glands go “bonkers” and produce too much sebum (skin oil) that, together with dirt, creates an inviting  “playground” for bacteria, and results in inflammation (cysts and pimples) or less dramatic, but still unwelcomed, whiteheads and blackheads.

Want Your Skin Glowing For Valentine’s Day?

Want your skin to glow for Valentine’s Day? You still have two days left to get your skin looking its best for the Cupid’s Day! Here are some of Dr. Agnes’ quick tips on DIY treatments designed to provide you with instant results especially good for troubled, acne prone skin. These treatments are good for all types of complexion both women and men.

Take your Skin to the Spa (at Home!) Try to do the following treatments at least twice before Tuesday, and in this order; steam first, followed by the astringent, lastly the rejuvenation.

Steam Bath: Steaming is very good to keep skin clean and blemish free, as it can remove excess sebum and dirt and deeply cleanse clogged pores. It also allows the black heads and whiteheads to be pushed out easily and therefore avoid pimples. Steam will also improve circulation, giving you a healthy glow.  Do the steam facial once before Valentine’s Day, but NOT on the big day.
